An update on the FDA’s recommendation that the morning after pill be available to girls as young as 15 without a prescription: President Obama recently expressed both his initial concern and his support for the new regulations while on a trip to Latin America. He made it clear that he wasn’t responsible for the decision, but he reaffirmed his belief that women and girls deserve access to contraception.
I think we’re seeing a shift in attitudes away from fear mongering and slut-shaming towards greater respect for individual choice. Putting access to health care into the hands of those who need it empowers them to make their own decisions and keep themselves safe. I think it was a good move on President Obama’s part to express his support and to visibly take part in this trend.
